Day 20: South Shore Lake Tahoe, CA to Ely, NV

Thursday October 30th, 2014
Total Miles: 350

We retrieved the motorcycle loaded up and headed out.  We stopped at the Zephyr Cove Restaurant for breakfast.  We split the Huevos Rancheros.  They had Outlaw Milk Stout on draft from Great Basin Brewing Company.  This is a beer that Galen had really wanted to try and we weren’t sure we would have another chance so he ordered one.  It is never too early for a beer when you are on vacation.  Tasted like a chocolate milk shake, yum!

After breakfast we turned on Highway 50 and continued to head east.  Highway 50 across Nevada was named The Loneliest Road in America by Life magazine in July 1986.  We filled up with fuel in Carson City and got started.  I was surprised how many cars and trucks we actually met on this road.  There were a few towns along the route which all had fuel.  We passed a number of recreation areas that were full of ATV’s and Side by Sides.  I will just say that we have been on much lonelier roads.  It was a beautiful ride and so much better then taking I-80.  I was surprised to learn that Nevada has more mountain ranges than any other State in the nation.

We dropped south and took the 50 ALT route.  Had a chance to turn off and ride on an old dried up lake bed.

We made it into Ely and it was dark.  We decided to get a room at the Prospector Hotel and Casino.  Seems like every hotel in Nevada has a Casino.  Galen negotiated a great rate and we got a $3.00 cash play.  We rode to Margarita’s Mexican Restaurant for dinner.  We split a dinner and each had a margarita.  At the bar were some locals and they were telling us about the large mine we passed coming into town.
Mining is booming in Nevada.  Headed back to the hotel sat in the hot tub and called it a night.
