Day 12: Kernville, CA to Lamoore, CA

Wednesday October 22nd, 2014
Total Miles: 285

We packed up the bike and headed to the Cracked Egg Cafe located downtown Kernville for breakfast.  We spilt a fantastic omelet and we were set for the day.  We doubled back north to our original route.  The morning was filled with a fun twisty blacktop road through the Sequoia National Forest (Forest Road 521 to 107).  These curves where crazy sharp and near the end I was wishing I hadn’t eaten so much for breakfast.  The locals were great pulling over to let us by.

The temperature began to rise.  We pulled over and shed some layers and decided to head to the General Sherman Tree.  We set the GPS for the fastest time.  The National Forest charged us $10 a person to enter the fee area.  The road was under construction and ended up taking us 45 minutes longer than normal to reach the Tree.  It would have been nice for the park ranger to have told us about the construction.  When we got there we decided the Sherman Tree wasn’t worth the $20 admission fee.  Galen and I spilt one of the beers he had in his pannier even if it wasn’t that prefect cold temperature.

After 30 minutes we loaded back up on the bike.  As we were packing the bike a sound more like a gun shot went off behind us.  Turns out a crow had landed on one of the Sequoia Trees which knocked off a pinecone which hit a car in the parking lot.  It actually did body damage and marred the back window.  Tip: never park under a Sequoia full of pinecones. Pretty sure that pine cone could have taken one of us out.  We loaded up and decided to head to Highway 1.  We saw there was a Brewery south of Fresno and programmed it into the GPS.  It was in an industrial park, we pulled up and could see the tanks but there was no taproom.  Tommy came out and introduced himself, turns out he was the owner/brewmaster.  He explained that his tap room was 20 miles away in Clovis.  We decided to check it out despite it was out of our way.  We had a little traffic but eventually arrived at House of Pendragon Brewing Company.  We met bartenders Brian and Vanessa.  We enjoyed a few beers and ordered pizza from next door which they deliver to the bar.  We watched the Royals take San Francisco in game 2 of the a World Series.  This turned out to be our favorite brewery of the trip.

We ended getting a room at the Best Western in Lamoore which was 44 miles away.  I was grateful it was dark when we made the trip to Lamoore.  All you could smell was cattle feed lots.  The smell was coming from both sides of the road.    We got a double queen room for $82.
