Day 14: Big Sur, CA to Hayward, CA

Friday, October 24th, 2014
Total Miles: 152

The temperature was 46 degrees as we packed up camp at Big Sur and headed North on Highway 1.  One of the first places we came to had 5 adventure bikes in the parking lot.  We pulled in for hot coffee and breakfast.  The guys had rode the Arizona Back Country Discovery Route.  Breakfast was excellent, we split a salmon and cream cheese omelet.  We chatted with a few of the guys in the parking lot before we all went our separate ways.  Chad from Adventure Designs told Galen about the Coast Road which was the original road before the Bixby Bridge was built.  The Coast Road was nine miles of dirt and it was my favorite part of Highway 1 hands down.  Amazing.

Thank you Chad for this little bit of information.  We joined back up with Highway 1 at the Bixby Bridge

We continued North to the Beemer Shop.  Chatted quick with Ted’s wife.  Ted wasn’t in the office.  Galen wanted to talk to Ted about suspension options for our bike.
We went to the West End Tap and Kitchen in Santa Cruz for lunch and a beer.  Check out the last line of their menu.  We saw this many times throughout California.

Turns out we didn’t have to move the bike we walked over for a beer at the Santa Cruz Mountain Brewery.

We headed to Adventure Designs and hit heavy traffic.  It was my first experience with lane splitting.  It was crazy.  I was holding my breath that we wouldn’t be taken out.  I was so glad we had enjoyed a beer which helped calm some of my nerves.  I was so freaked out I couldn’t even take photos.  We finally arrived safe and sound at Adventure Designs and met Karsten, Kyle and of course Chad.

The guys gave us a tour of the place.  I was mentally taking note of everything I wanted to add to my wish list.  They have a great operation.  If you are in the area you need to stop by and check them out.
That night we went to dinner with Chad and his wife Sara.  We went to American Oak in Alameda.  Great whiskey and awesome conversation.
Royals won game three of the World Series, score!  Back to Chad and Sara’s for a few beers and continue our conversation.  Great night.
